This is International with Crested Butte in the distance. My friend Danny Kristoff was bartender at the hottest place in town, a big downhill race was going on, the skiing was great. Once again, a good time was had by all.
Crested Butte is one of a few ski areas in the United States with a ski run long enough for an international regulation downhill ski race. It was a wild race because Crested Butte is steep and fast.
Apparently, a surf photographer was a celebrity in Crested Butte in 1982 and I got roped into a "Celebrity Ski Race". I am not, or ever was, a ski racer. I did not win, I did not crash and enjoyed the celebrity cocktails later.
This is Monument, more of Crested Butte's steep and challenging terrain. The top is over 12,000 feet and the base area is around 9,000 feet. That is relatively high altitude for a ski resort in the continential USA with some serious steep terrain. We were skiing an off trail area called the "Outer Limits" with some of the best skiiers here. At the end of the week, we were all hurt.
